Next week we will be starting on a unit involving the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This is a fantastic book that the students will enjoy and have a lot of fun discussing. Students will have the option of either reading the book aloud with thier classmates or individually. While reading they will be working towards peiceing together thier final project for the unit (a poster that touches on a number of themes and main ideas from the book).

All of the students recieved a grade update either Wednesday of Thursday and an update about any assignments they have yet to turn in. Students need to turn in any late work ASAP in order for it to count towards their quarter grade.

It's looking like we'll finish up our in-class reading ofThe Diary of Anne Frank this week. Each student has a "scene-line" to be filling out in class, as well as an Act I quiz and Act II vobabulary activity that should already be turned in.

After we finish up reading, the students will take an Act II quiz and then work in pairs on a final unit project. The final project will involve creating a stage design for The Diary of Anne Frank, creating relevant symbols for characters, wrtiting about the meaning of characters' symbols, and mock-casting the play with friends, family, or celebrities. It is more than likely that the students won't get started on thier unit project until next week, but I've asked them to start thinking about the project and how they might approach it.

If they haven't already, students need to turn in their Anne Frank timelines ASAP. Mid-term grades will be turned in Monday (2/8) and the timeline is a significant chunk of their grade.

Next week we will continue reading The Diary of Anne Frank in-class. We are reading the play adaptation of the diary, so the students are split up into reading groups and each of them have thier own part.

While reading, the students are expected to be keeping track of important information from each scene on a designated worksheet. As each group finishes their reading of Act I, they will have an Act I quiz and a vocabulary excersise to complete before proceeding to Act II. Students will be given ample time to complete both the quiz and the vocabulary activity in-class.

Hopefully we will wrap up the reading of the play by the end of next week. At that point students will begin working in pairs on a culminating Diary of Anne Frank project.

FYI, if you have any interest, with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (Nov. 9, 1989), there are a large number of retrospective feature articles being published. I have enjoyed so very much reading many of them, I wanted to share.
